Fielding percentage is determined by dividing a player’s total chances into a total successful chances. These chances are calculated based on the number of opportunities a player has to make a play on the ball. The formula for fielding percentage is as follows:
Fielding Percentage = (Total Successful Chances / Total Chances) x 100
The total successful chances include all the plays a player makes successfully, such as catches, assists, and putouts. Conversely, the total chances encompass all the balls hit into play, including hits, sacrifices, and errors.
To calculate the total successful chances, you need to add up the player’s catches, assists, and putouts. For instance, if a player has 100 catches, 50 assists, and 30 putouts, their total successful chances would be 180.
Similarly, to determine the total chances, you must add up the player’s opportunities to make a play on the ball. This includes all the balls hit into play, such as hits, sacrifices, and errors. For example, if a player has 200 balls hit into play, including 150 hits, 30 sacrifices, and 20 errors, their total chances would be 200.
Once you have both the total successful chances and the total chances, you can apply the formula to calculate the fielding percentage. In our example, the fielding percentage would be:
Fielding Percentage = (180 / 200) x 100 = 90%
This means that the player successfully made a play on 90% of the balls hit into play during the season.
