How to Make Pockets: A Step-by-Step Guide
Pockets are a practical and stylish addition to any garment, whether it’s a pair of jeans, a jacket, or a dress. They not only provide a convenient place to store small items but also add a touch of functionality and flair to your wardrobe. If you’re interested in learning how to make pockets, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of creating your own pockets, from selecting the right fabric to sewing them into your garment. Let’s get started!
1. Choose the Right Fabric and Pattern
The first step in making pockets is to choose the right fabric and pattern. Consider the type of garment you’re adding the pockets to and select a fabric that complements it. For example, if you’re making pockets for jeans, you might choose a denim or cotton fabric. If you’re adding pockets to a dress, consider a lightweight, flowy fabric.
Once you’ve chosen your fabric, decide on the pattern. There are many different types of pockets, such as patch pockets, side pockets, and cargo pockets. Choose a pattern that suits your garment and your personal style.
2. Cut Out the Pocket Pieces
Next, you’ll need to cut out the pieces for your pocket. Refer to your chosen pattern for the exact dimensions and markings. Lay your fabric flat and use a ruler and fabric pen to mark the pocket pieces. Then, using a pair of fabric scissors, carefully cut out the pieces.
If your pattern includes interfacing, cut out the interfacing pieces as well. Interfacing adds stability to the pocket and ensures it holds its shape.
3. Sew the Pocket Pieces Together
Now it’s time to sew the pocket pieces together. Lay the pocket pieces right sides together and pin them in place. Use a needle and thread to sew the pieces together along the marked lines, leaving a small opening for turning the pocket right side out.
Once the pocket pieces are sewn together, trim any excess threads and clip the corners to make turning the pocket easier.
4. Turn the Pocket Right Side Out
Turn the pocket right side out through the small opening you left earlier. Use a point turner or the end of a pencil to push out the corners and edges of the pocket. Press the pocket flat with an iron to remove any wrinkles.
5. Attach the Pocket to the Garment
Now it’s time to attach the pocket to your garment. Pin the pocket in place, making sure it’s aligned with the designated pocket location. Use a needle and thread to sew the pocket to the garment, securing it in place.
If your garment has an opening for the pocket, such as a side seam or a pocket opening, make sure the pocket is attached securely to the opening. This will ensure the pocket stays in place when the garment is worn.
6. Finishing Touches
Once the pocket is attached, you can add any finishing touches you like. This might include topstitching around the pocket edges, adding a button or buttonhole, or even inserting a pocket flap.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully made a pocket. With this knowledge, you can now add pockets to any garment you choose, giving your wardrobe a personal touch and added functionality. Happy sewing!
